Russian Drone Production, Moscow Drone Attacks, and Iran Talks: July 20 Key Events

July 20 was marked by several key developments. Russia officially showcased its production capabilities for Shahed and Geran-2 kamikaze drones at a plant in Yelabuga. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced a significant expansion of drone production, which are regularly used against Ukraine.

On the same day, Russian air defenses reported shooting down 39 drones over several hours. Some headed toward Moscow, causing major airports to suspend operations and widespread flight delays. More than 130 trains were also delayed due to infrastructure damage from drone attacks.

Russia has been strengthening its cooperation with North Korea, registering trademarks for Korean manufacturers and planning both a road bridge on the border and railway connections.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced changes among ambassadors and instructed diplomats to intensify efforts to sign military contracts with partner countries. Sanctions were also introduced against several individuals for information activities aiding Russia.

In June, China increased its exports of rare earth minerals to the United States despite tense negotiations. Alternatives for supplying rare earths from Ukraine are being considered.

New negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program are possible with France, the UK, Germany, and China participating, but the US is not currently involved.

Experts note Russia’s growing reliance on China, while developments in the Middle East may affect global policy regarding Ukraine.
