Turkey Ignores Trump's Call, Continues to Buy Russian Oil and Gas: Impact on War and Politics

Turkish authorities maintain energy imports from Russia despite US and Trump pressure, shaping geopolitics in the region.

Turkey continues to import Russian oil and gas, disregarding US President Donald Trump’s call to sever energy ties with Moscow. The Turkish energy minister said this is a commercial decision by refineries, signaling Ankara’s unwillingness to support US sanctions.

Turkey’s strategic geographic position, including its control over a key strait, grants it significant leverage and benefits. Traditionally, Turkey has not supported sanctions against Russia, maintaining steady relations except for incidents like the downing of a Russian jet. Russian tourism also remains vital for Turkey’s economy.

This energy import stance is typical not only for Turkey but also for several other states, including Taiwan and European countries. Many express public support for sanctions or Ukraine, yet quietly continue trading with Russia despite the ongoing war.

The lack of effective pressure on Ankara is linked to Turkey’s unique regional importance and strategic advantages. The US is increasing pressure and expanding agreements with Turkey for alternative energy supplies, such as new contracts for American liquefied natural gas.

Experts note a widespread double standard: many Western and international actors balance between sanctions and economic interests, enabling Russia to maintain revenues. Pressure from Trump or other outside actors may have limited influence, and Turkey’s refusal to halt Russian imports is unlikely to change soon.

However, gradual sanctions and stricter rhetoric from the US and its partners may reduce Russian income over time. This is seen as a key strategy to economically weaken Moscow and move closer to ending the war in Ukraine.
