A Day of Key Events in Davos: Budanov's Speech, Trump's Visit, Russian Attacks, and New Statements

Overview of major events at the World Economic Forum in Davos: Kyrylo Budanov's speech, Trump's arrival, negotiations, Russian attacks, Kyiv's challenges, and legal cases in Ukraine.

January 21 saw a series of significant events at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Among the highlights was a speech by Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, who expressed cautious optimism for peace, but emphasized that the outcome depends largely on Russia. According to Budanov, the Ukrainian delegation continues working with the US on security guarantees and a postwar recovery plan.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s arrival in Davos was anticipated, although his aircraft had to return to the US due to technical problems before making a second attempt. In Davos, Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev met with US representatives, with talks described as constructive. Negotiations continue over an $800 billion Ukraine Prosperity Deal, though the details remain unresolved.

Budanov also pointed out that China had benefited from sanctions against Russia to boost profits, but insisted no weapons had been transferred to Russia. The role of China in the war and global geopolitics is a central topic at the forum.

The US reported another Russian “shadow fleet” tanker was detained in the Caribbean amid its enforcement of sanctions. Despite criticism from and towards Europe, Trump’s schedule in Davos includes signing a Peace Council charter and meetings with international leaders.

Issues under discussion include potential US involvement in Greenland and energy politics concerning China and Russian oil trade.

Against this backdrop, Kyiv faces severe energy shortages due to Russian strikes, leading to evacuations and disruptions in water and heating supplies.

Overnight, Russian attacks continued across Ukraine, notably in Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa, resulting in casualties. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted most drones involved in the assaults.

Among other news, a treason investigation has been opened against political consultant Petrov, and legal proceedings against Yulia Tymoshenko continue at Ukraine’s High Anti-Corruption Court.
