US Pressure on India: Tariffs Over Trade Ties With Russia

Donald Trump threatens 25% tariffs against India for buying weapons and oil from Russia, offering relief if India redirects its contracts.

The United States is increasing pressure on India due to its trade relations with Russia. Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods in response to India purchasing weapons and significant volumes of oil products from Russia.

Trump explained that the tariff could be reduced if India redirects its purchases to countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. This approach aims to decrease the U.S. trade deficit and reduce Russian influence, and reflects ongoing trade discussions between India and the U.S.

Traditionally, India has had major arms contracts with Russia since Soviet times and actively imports Russian oil, also exporting refined oil products. The EU had previously introduced restrictions banning imports of oil products refined from Russian crude.

The U.S. now uses trade mechanisms to encourage India to move away from Moscow and increase purchases of American arms and energy. Similar approaches may be taken with other countries maintaining close military and energy ties with Russia, such as China.

India’s choice may affect Russian energy exports, potentially restraining Russia’s capacity to fund its war against Ukraine. Analysts note that the U.S. is intent on using global trade and sanctions to limit Russia’s power.
