Trump Imposes 25% Tariffs on India Over Trade With Russia: Sanctions and Consequences

Donald Trump announced new tariffs on Indian goods due to continued energy and arms trade with Russia. China's position may also face sanctions.

US President Donald Trump has announced the introduction of a 25% tariff on goods from India. The reason cited is India's ongoing economic cooperation with Russia, particularly in energy and arms, despite calls from the international community to end such trade during the war against Ukraine.

Trump warned that the already imposed tariffs could increase by an additional 100% on Indian goods, should India not reduce its cooperation with Russia in oil and the military sector. This significantly increases pressure on New Delhi, especially as Indian energy officials had previously indicated a willingness to move away from Russian oil if US sanctions were imposed.

Trump's actions are part of a broader strategy targeting countries that support Russia. The US is also seeking to influence China, which continues to purchase Russian and Iranian oil, considering it a sovereign right. US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent indicated that if China ignores these warnings, economic sanctions are possible.

Experts predict that India could give up Russian oil with minimal impact, as it has diversified suppliers. However, for China, buying Russian and Iranian oil is both an economic and political move, complicating negotiations with Beijing.

The future actions of India and China are crucial for Russia's finances and the course of the Ukraine war. Reduced oil exports to both countries could affect Russia's economic stability and force a policy rethink regarding the conflict. The coming weeks will be key in shaping new geopolitical dynamics.
