Shelling of Kyiv, drone strikes and political escalation: main events of the day

Russia struck Kyiv, damaging residential buildings and causing casualties. Ukraine responded with drone and missile attacks on Russian military and infrastructure. Tensions escalate among US, Trump, and Russia. NABU and SAPO in Ukraine regain independence amid anti-corruption protests.

Last night, Russian forces carried out another airstrike on Kyiv, hitting residential buildings. At least two people were killed, including one child, and ten more children were injured. Russia deliberately targets civilian infrastructure with the aim of intimidating the population.

The enemy also used jet-powered Shahed-type drones in the attack. Some of these drones targeted civilian and municipal infrastructure objects in Kyiv. While the threat of further attacks persists, a large-scale use of such drones is unlikely due to limited numbers.

In response, Ukrainian drones struck military and industrial sites inside Russia, notably in the city of Penza. The local radio plant, which manufactures products for the Russian armed forces, was damaged. Drones also hit railway infrastructure in the Volgograd region, causing train delays and disruptions.

Political escalation continues: following the overnight attacks, statements were issued by US politicians and Russian officials. Dmitry Medvedev threatened nuclear strikes in response to Donald Trump's rhetoric, who warned of new sanctions against India for its cooperation with Russia. China has refrained from taking a clear position, while Russia ignores ultimatums.

Inside Ukraine, protests continued against the loss of independence of anti-corruption agencies. The Verkhovna Rada has voted to restore the independence of NABU and SAPO, with the president's signature pending. Ukrainians highlight the role of civil society in defending these changes. Aid for the military continues with new drones delivered to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Overall, the situation in Ukraine remains tense as the country resists new Russian threats, faces ongoing political struggle, modernizes its armed forces, and maintains security through broad public support.
