Kremlin Rift, Negotiations and Western Pressure: How the Situation Around Ukraine is Changing

Putin's ally Dmitry Kozak distances himself from the Kremlin, the West increases pressure on Russia, and the world prepares for Ukraine negotiations.

New signs of division have emerged within the Kremlin's political circle as Putin's close ally Dmitry Kozak publicly stated he was against the war and called for an end to hostilities in Ukraine. This suggests growing dissent in the Russian president's inner circle. Kozak emphasized that he warned partners about the inadvisability of a full-scale invasion and is now urging Putin to halt the aggression.

Meanwhile, American and European politicians are stepping up diplomatic efforts. European Union, US and Baltic representatives insist on upholding Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders and securing guarantees for its safety. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced the possibility of lifting the embargo on arms supplies to Ukraine, which could significantly boost its defense.

Special attention is paid to the statements by US politicians. Senator J.D. Vance stresses the need for direct talks between the leaders of the US, Russia and Ukraine. He acknowledges that any compromise might leave both sides dissatisfied but insists that seeking a path to peace is vital. Ukrainian authorities, European diplomats, and US officials are preparing for a possible high-level meeting.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an address that he sees no readiness from Russia for genuine steps towards peace and that the only way to force the Kremlin's hand is stronger economic pressure. Russian strikes on civilian targets, including a hospital and bus station in Zaporizhzhia, have increased calls for sanctions and a robust international response.

Western activity shows a commitment to supporting Ukraine diplomatically, militarily and economically. European partners emphasize that no change of borders by force is acceptable and only guarantees for Ukraine and the EU can bring about a sustainable peace.
