Alaska Talks: U.S. Strategy, Moscow's Position and Prospects for Ukraine

Analysis of the upcoming U.S.-Russia meeting in Alaska, sides' views on a ceasefire, and the broader implications for Ukraine.

On the 15th, American diplomacy considers the upcoming meeting with Kremlin representatives in Alaska a significant victory. The main goal for the United States is to discuss the prospects for a ceasefire and geopolitical balancing between Moscow, China, and the West.

A key topic is halting military actions along the current line of contact without additional Ukrainian territorial concessions. The Ukrainian side insists on negotiations only after a full ceasefire. The US views freezing the conflict as a temporary measure, aimed at redistributing influence between Russia and China.

European partners and NATO oppose the idea of ceding territory without active fighting, seeing it as unacceptable. For Russia, any potential agreement is seen mainly as a tactical pause ahead of further geopolitical moves.

In addition to the Ukraine issue, the US seeks to limit Moscow's influence in India, Central Asia, and the Caucasus to strengthen its global position against China. Meanwhile, Russia faces growing isolation and a loss of traditional partners.

Even if a ceasefire is reached, it is unlikely to be strategic — for Moscow, it would serve as a tactical step, and for Washington, as part of a wider geopolitical game.

For Ukraine, complete integration with the West and securing support for future challenges remains crucial. The prospect of peace is still uncertain, and a semi-military situation may continue. Kyiv’s main goal is to obtain clear assurances over security and support from its partners.
