Crisis in Poland-Ukraine Relations: Causes and Consequences

Valeriy Klochuk and political analyst Yevhen Magda discuss the Polish scandal over the Ukrainian flag, sources of tension, and political context.

On August 14, at the Veza Public Analytics Center, Valeriy Klochuk and political scientist Yevhen Magda discussed the increase in tensions between Poland and Ukraine. The main topic was the recent incident at a concert in Poland, where Ukrainians displayed a red and black flag, sparking negative reactions from the Polish side. The subsequent deportation of more than 50 Ukrainians for public order violations was also discussed.

The experts noted that Polish society reacts sharply to Ukrainian national symbols, using them in political rhetoric. Historical events like the Volyn tragedy still cause tension between the countries.

The analysts observed that economic integration of Ukrainians in Poland does not pose real competition to locals, as most Ukrainian labor migrants fill jobs left open by Poles moving west. However, the increase in Ukrainian migrants and attention to issues like taxes and social benefits contribute to the politicization of the topic.

It was emphasized that political forces use anti-migration rhetoric related to Ukraine to boost ratings ahead of elections and to mobilize certain voter groups. At the same time, Polish politicians actively use relations with Ukraine as a campaign tool.

Other reasons for the crisis include differences in historical memory and interpretation of shared tragic events, as well as Russian influence that exacerbates the conflict. The experts stressed that strategic partnership remains important, but current trust has been undermined.

In conclusion, the experts agreed that the crisis is a product of both domestic political circumstances and external pressure. Resolution is possible through dialogue and enhancing mutual understanding on a societal level.
