An important online meeting took place yesterday, which triggered a wave of publications in the Western media focusing on the positions of European states, the US, and China’s role in resolving the war in Ukraine.
Particular attention was drawn to statements by French leaders, comments from Macron, and reports about a phone conversation between German opposition leader Friedrich Merz and Donald Trump. According to media sources, Merz attempted to involve European representatives in an upcoming meeting but Trump did not support Zelensky’s participation, fearing it could complicate dialogue with Putin.
Despite differing rhetoric, European leaders display unity on the main goal – to end the war while preserving Ukraine’s statehood and independence. However, there is a lack of decisive progress in increasing defence support to Ukraine in practice.
Germany is developing its defense industry for economic reasons, with Merz adjusting his approaches by cooperating with the US. Experts note that Trump is cautious in dealings with Putin, hoping for a peaceful solution, but it remains to be seen how his stance may change if peace efforts collapse.
China also plays a key role, closely monitoring the evolving dynamics among the US, Europe, and Russia. If negotiations fail, China may shift its position toward Russia, furthering its own interests in the region and in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
