Zelensky and Trump Meeting: New Approaches to Negotiations and Security Guarantees for Ukraine

Outcome of Zelensky and Trump's meeting: prospects for talks with Putin, security guarantees, Russia's response.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Donald Trump, joined by representatives from European nations. Contrary to fears of confrontation, the talks proceeded calmly, largely due to the involvement of European leaders.

The discussions focused on the potential negotiations between Zelensky and Putin and on security guarantees for Ukraine. Zelensky has shifted his initial stance and no longer insists on a ceasefire before talks with Putin. Such talks have been discussed previously, but Putin’s participation remains uncertain due to his repeated refusals and skepticism expressed by Russia.

No concrete agreements were reached on territorial issues. Zelensky stated that such questions will be discussed directly with Putin if such a meeting occurs. Western sources suggest the Ukrainian side might consider proportional territory swaps, but no decision has been made.

On security guarantees, European leaders propose a model similar to NATO’s Article 5 but without Ukraine formally joining NATO. A finalized proposal is expected within the next 7-10 days, potentially covering financial aid for weapons purchases or deployment of allied forces to Ukraine’s rear regions.

Russia’s rhetoric remains tough despite formal openness to dialogue, and it continues to attack Ukrainian territory, signifying no real concessions.

The Ukrainian public expects transparency in matters of negotiations and security guarantees. European and US leaders emphasize the importance of a strong Ukrainian army as the best security guarantee. Definitive agreements or real changes are only possible after written confirmation.

This meeting marked a step toward avoiding conflict between Ukraine and the US, but the process’s future depends mainly on Russia’s response. Ukraine has reaffirmed its agency and willingness to defend its interests in negotiations.
