Zelensky Prepares for Security Guarantee Talks with Trump and Putin

Zelensky plans to discuss new security guarantees for Ukraine with Trump, followed by a meeting with Putin. European leaders support a trilateral summit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is preparing for significant international talks focused on security guarantees for Ukraine, modeled after NATO's Article Five but outside the Alliance framework. Zelensky will first meet with Donald Trump to discuss these guarantees, with a subsequent potential meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to sources, these consultations could occur on August 22 or 23.

Zelensky's trip will also include a stop in Paris to participate in a coalition of willing countries. European leaders are expected to assist in organizing a trilateral summit involving Ukraine, the US, and Russia. This initiative has been supported by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alex Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and European Council President António Costa.

The US has proposed security guarantees for Ukraine similar to Article Five of NATO, but without official involvement from the Alliance. While Ukraine has received such guarantees before, their effectiveness has been questioned—they have not provided adequate protection in the face of threats. Concerns have been raised about these latest proposals being coordinated with Putin.

Trump has stated his goal is to achieve a full peace agreement, not just a ceasefire, but is yet to reveal specific details. The Russian side reportedly has its own demands, including Ukraine's recognition of the occupation of Crimea and parts of the Donbas region. Meanwhile, Putin signals readiness for a phased withdrawal from other occupied regions if certain conditions are met, including elections in Ukraine.

The potential summit involving Zelensky, Trump, and Putin could be pivotal for peace efforts. However, analysts warn of unpredictable negotiations and emphasize the need for strong international backing for Ukrainian security. The Ukrainian public and experts are closely following developments, while volunteers continue fundraising for the military along vital frontlines.
