Talks, Putin's Visit to China and Redrawing Ukrainian Regions: Analytics with Ihor Chalenko

Valerii Klochuk talks to political scientist Ihor Chalenko about potential peace talks, Putin in Beijing, border changes, Russia’s economy and world leaders.

On August 22, Valerii Klochuk, head of the Center for Public Analytics “Vezha”, discussed current events with political scientist Ihor Chalenko. They examined potential negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, a possible visit by Vladimir Putin to Beijing, and parliamentary proposals to change the administrative borders of certain Ukrainian regions.

Chalenko commented on the expectations from Donald Trump’s statements, the prospect of the US shifting away from its mediating role, and the reactions from Russia and Ukraine. He noted that a complex preparatory process for a possible in-person meeting between Putin and Zelensky is underway, but Russia is trying to maintain the status quo and stall negotiations.

They paid special attention to MP Anna Skorokhod’s legislative initiatives to redraw Donetsk and Luhansk regions—which has sparked criticism and concern among MPs and the public. Chalenko also analyzed Russia’s tactics for pressuring Ukraine’s economy and the global geopolitical balancing among the US, China, and Europe.

Particular focus was given to the economic situation in Russia, including banking system issues, capital outflow, and factors that might affect Putin’s willingness to alter his course in the war. The positions of China, the US, and European countries remain crucial as they continue to balance interests amid significant geopolitical challenges.
