Lately, there is growing recognition in Washington that pressuring Ukraine for a rapid ‘peace’ with Russia is not working. Even traditionally skeptical politicians like Vance have begun to adjust their rhetoric on Ukraine. Vance’s recent interviews highlight evolving US approaches to supporting Kyiv in both the war and potential peace efforts.
Previously, the White House attempted to limit Ukraine’s ability to conduct long-range strikes by reducing ATACMS missile deliveries. However, Ukraine, leveraging its technical base and European resources, compensated for these constraints by developing drones and producing cruise missiles. This has increased Ukraine’s capacity to strike strategic targets inside Russia.
Nonetheless, pressure on Kyiv continues, with some US officials exploring alternative scenarios for ending the war, including possible territorial concessions. In interviews with Fox News and NBC, Vance reiterated the US’s reluctance to continue financing the war at previous levels and called on Europe to take greater responsibility for Ukraine’s security. He stressed that Ukraine’s sovereignty must remain intact in any settlement.
Vance also addressed Moscow’s proposals for settlement, including guarantees that Ukraine would remain independent and no pro-Russian government would be installed in Kyiv. However, he indicated that the US would not force Ukraine to make territorial concessions if Kyiv was unwilling.
Russia reacted sharply, with Foreign Minister Lavrov expressing dissatisfaction with pro-European positions and appealing for a complete US withdrawal from war matters. Meanwhile, European allies continue to support Ukraine, maintaining the balance of power in the conflict.
Analysts note that the key to peace lies in consistent pressure on Moscow through sanctions, military support, and Western unity. Despite political debate in Washington, there has been no drastic shift in support for Ukraine, though changes in approach are ongoing.
