In a live broadcast, renowned journalist and writer Ostap Drozdov analyzed the recent decision allowing young men under 22 to leave Ukraine. Using animal-based metaphors, he illustrated how such decisions are often shrouded in absurdity and arbitrariness, arguing that when a state grants freedom, it fundamentally contradicts democratic principles.
Drozdov highlighted that the age limit of 22 appears unreasonable, as military mobilization age is currently 25. He noted that the decision has divided Ukrainian society: some believe it will spur mass emigration among youth, while others expect it to encourage young people to return. Drozdov is skeptical about the latter, given the risks and wartime realities in Ukraine.
The journalist also pointed to government efforts to tighten penalties for illegal border crossings and disobeying military orders, warning that such actions infringe personal freedoms and worsen the situation, especially considering the prevalence of harsh and sometimes unreasonable military commands.
The interview touched on the international context, particularly the negotiation process for Ukraine's security guarantees. Drozdov noted several proposals are in development at the international level. The US, he said, remains active, while Russia's demands have not changed since 2022. The fate of any agreement will depend on the willingness of both sides to compromise, something Washington encourages for Kyiv and Moscow alike.
Drozdov also commented on Donald Trump's statement threatening stronger sanctions against Russia if peace agreements collapse and did not rule out similar pressure on Ukraine should negotiations fail. He concluded the coming months would be decisive for talks and for the future direction of the war.
