Speaking in Chisinau alongside the leaders of France, Poland, and Moldova, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that European countries want a quick end to the war in Ukraine, but not at the cost of Ukrainian capitulation. According to him, peace must be just and not involve concessions to Russia, particularly regarding territories currently controlled by Ukraine.
Merz's statement comes amid calls from some US officials for territorial concessions from Ukraine. However, Germany, France, and Poland are united in their support for Ukraine and oppose ending the war on Russian terms.
The visit of European leaders to Moldova coincided with the country's Independence Day and comes before parliamentary elections, during which Russia is increasing its political and financial efforts to support pro-Russian forces. Moldova, as a parliamentary republic, may become the next target of Kremlin influence if pro-Russian parties win the elections, posing additional risks to Ukraine's security.
The leaders of France, Poland, and Germany support Moldova's aspirations for EU integration and oppose a Russian political comeback. Observers note that the situation in Moldova is directly linked to the war in Ukraine and Russia's intention to expand its influence across the post-Soviet space.
In his address, Vitaliy Portnikov stressed that a peace based on concessions to Ukraine would only fuel military and political instability in Europe. He highlighted the need for a just peace and support for pro-European forces in the region.
