Massive Attack on Ukraine: Western Response and Threat to Global Security

Vitaly Portnikov analyzes the Russian missile strikes on Ukraine, Western reaction, and the US role in confronting Russian aggression.

Today, Ukraine faced one of the largest attacks in recent times: Russia used almost all types of weapons against peaceful cities, including Kyiv and other regions. The number of casualties is growing. The Chernobyl zone was also targeted by missile strikes, evidence of the Kremlin's willingness to use nuclear blackmail and create a global catastrophe risk in order to force Ukraine and the West to capitulate.

These attacks came as a response to statements from US President Donald Trump and his team suggesting that the Russian president wants peace. However, Russia's actions contradict these claims. Just hours before the strikes, American politicians spoke about Putin's readiness for peace talks, but the ongoing attacks have disproved their assurances.

Vitaly Portnikov stresses that words are no substitute for genuine support. Without concrete actions to support Kyiv, there is a risk that the US and its allies become unwitting accomplices to Russian aggression. The ban on Ukraine's use of long-range American missiles to strike Russian territory appears as real assistance to the Kremlin.

Portnikov believes that every new massive attack will be considered in the context of decisions and statements by Western leaders, particularly Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and other politicians influencing support for Ukraine. It is vital for Ukrainians and the world to understand the US role as a leader of democracies in stopping such crimes and protecting civilians.

The author calls for a change in attitude towards helping Ukraine, increased defensive support, and counteraction to Russian military potential. He expresses condolences to the victims and hopes the international context will shift in favor of Ukraine and against Russian aggression.
