Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in China for an extended visit, where he is discussing with Xi Jinping military support for the war against Ukraine, cooperation in military technology, and sanctions. He plans to participate in a Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting and in a military parade dedicated to the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II. Turkish and North Korean leaders are also present at the events.
Reports indicate that Putin seeks to secure financial and technical support from China, as well as components for drone and weapons production. About 90% of the machines supporting the Russian defense industry are supplied by China. Recent evidence reveals that Russian drones largely utilize Chinese and Iranian parts.
Meanwhile, statements from Russian Chief of the General Staff Gerasimov confirmed intentions to continue offensive actions in autumn and spring, allegedly to strengthen negotiating positions with other players, especially the US and Trump. The Ukrainian General Staff notes that Russia’s seasonal offensive campaign ended without achieving significant objectives: no major city was taken and Russian troops suffered heavy personnel and equipment losses.
Domestically, tensions in Ukraine persist. There have been reports about former Speaker Andriy Parubiy being denied state protection shortly before he was killed, while Russian businessmen and oligarchs retain assets and influence in Ukraine. At the same time, the Ukrainian company Kyivstar, controlled by oligarch Fridman, has repeatedly changed registration jurisdiction, avoiding full compliance with Ukrainian law.
On the international front, there has been increased contact between China, India, and Russia. The Indian prime minister visited China for the first time in years to discuss economic issues. Some countries, such as Indonesia, refused to participate in China’s parade amid Western sanctions and political differences.
Amid rumors about Trump’s health and calls for potential talks between Trump, Zelensky, and Putin, experts caution against over-optimism regarding a quick settlement. Ukraine urges unity and continued support from allies, as the continuation of the war highly depends on external assistance.
