Poland has officially confirmed that Russian drones deliberately attacked its territory, dismissing claims of an accident or electronic warfare error. According to Poland’s Air Force and NATO, the drones were intentionally directed at Polish airspace.
Russia has categorically denied any involvement. Kremlin officials have declined to comment, while state media and some Russian politicians claim the incident was either accidental or a provocation by Ukraine. Meanwhile, some Russian commentators have openly suggested further attacks against Poland. In response, Poland temporarily closed Warsaw airport due to military activity and summoned a Russian diplomat to deliver a note of protest.
The attack coincided with a heavy Russian air raid on Ukraine. Around 20 drones, mainly Geran-style imitations known as "Gerbera," crossed through Belarusian and Ukrainian airspace before entering Poland, some reportedly equipped with combat payloads. Poland responded with F-16 and allied F-35 fighter jets but does not use anti-drone UAVs like Ukraine.
The incident has led to heightened international scrutiny. NATO has launched consultations under Article 4 of the Alliance Treaty, while military experts stress the rising risk of further attacks and the need for stronger air defense in NATO's eastern flank. Poland is also considering further measures, such as restricting civil aviation flights near the Ukrainian border.
Russian propaganda networks have accused Ukraine of orchestrating the incident. However, Polish and Western experts have dismissed these claims, citing drone debris and technical specifications indicating Russian origin.
Ukraine continues to bolster its drone fleet and air defenses with support from volunteers and international partners. Ukrainian military units regularly report successful interceptions of Russian drones and urge ongoing assistance to strengthen their defense capabilities.
Observers warn that a lack of decisive NATO response could invite more such attacks. Poland and NATO are closely monitoring the situation and preparing additional security measures. Military and information battles persist, while Ukrainian forces express appreciation for aid and remain focused on resisting the adversary on the front lines.
