Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski harshly criticized the Western response to Russian drone strikes in Polish airspace, stating that Ukraine and Poland did not receive the promised sanctions support.
Sikorski reminded viewers of US President Donald Trump’s commitments to enact new sanctions against Russia, but highlighted the lack of concrete steps from the US administration. European leaders are intensively negotiating with the US to coordinate sanctions pressure, but their approaches differ significantly.
Trump wants the EU to impose tariffs on China and India to stop them from buying Russian oil, while the EU asks the US to take stronger actions against China. The effectiveness of such tariffs is questioned as India and China continue to purchase Russian oil despite existing sanctions.
Experts note that there is no real collective defense strategy against Russian aggression and that Western countries’ fear of direct conflict with Russia influences their reluctance to take decisive measures. Poland has called for a joint air defense system with Ukraine, but this proposal has not gained traction so far.
Political disagreements between the US and EU on how to pressure Russia persist, complicating efforts to align their sanction policies. As long as Western countries do not overcome their fear of escalation, Russian strikes are likely to continue.
