US Military Appears at CSTO Drills in Belarus: Analysis and Possible Implications

For the first time, US military personnel joined CSTO exercises in Belarus. Experts analyze the potential political consequences.

Today, an unprecedented event took place in Belarus as US military personnel participated for the first time in CSTO "Zapad-2025" joint exercises. The drills are held under the auspices of the Belarusian Ministry of Defense, which officially confirmed the presence of American representatives.

According to reports, the US military were present as observers and did not interact with journalists. Analysts note that this move may reflect a new diplomatic approach, aiming to draw Belarus into constructive dialogue with the West and highlighting the continued geopolitical contest between the US, Russia, China, and the EU.

The unexpected presence of NATO troops in Belarus is seen as especially symbolic given ongoing tensions between the US, Russia, and their respective allies since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Experts discuss prospects for renewed dialogue, possible easing of sanctions against Belarus, and increased US investment and business openings in the country.

Some analysts link the event to recent instances in which Belarusian territory was reportedly used for Russian drone attacks on NATO countries, and see it as the US attempt to counter growing Chinese influence. The role of President Lukashenko, who maintains ties with the US, Russia, and China, is also under discussion.

The "Zapad-2025" military drills, involving about 4,500 troops and 450 pieces of equipment, have drawn significant international attention. Lithuanian intelligence suggests up to 40,000 troops could be present, adding to regional security concerns. Analysis is ongoing as experts monitor future actions by the US, Belarus, and their partners.
