Sanctions Against Russia: Debates between the US, Europe, and Ukraine’s Position

American and European debates on sanctions against Russia and Ukraine’s response to these discussions.

Today, the US Secretary of the Treasury stated that the war in Ukraine could end in 60-90 days if the US and Europe jointly impose sanctions against Russia. However, debates have arisen as the US demands synchronized sanctions, including tariffs on China and India, while Europe prefers the US to act independently. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has supported Europe’s stance, emphasizing the need for US sanctions against Russia regardless of the EU's position.

The discussion highlights substantial trade between the EU and Russia, exceeding 60 billion euros annually, while US-Russia trade is about 3.5 billion dollars. Some EU countries, notably Slovakia and Hungary, continue purchasing Russian oil. Trump insists these countries halt Russian oil imports and links this to delays in financial aid to Ukraine.

Zelensky has repeatedly called on Europe to strengthen sanctions but stresses the importance of cooperation, as most support for Ukraine comes from the EU. The US, especially under the Trump administration, is limiting its assistance while making demands on Europe.

The US also calls for imposing tariffs on China and India to help accelerate the end of the war, but so far, actions have been limited to statements. The debates reveal different approaches and political maneuvering on both sides, with Ukraine seeking to defend its interests. The situation remains complex, and sanctions and international pressure continue to play a crucial role in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
