Possible War End Scenarios: Zelensky-Trump Meeting, UN Role, and Security Guarantees

Political scientist Ihor Reiterovych analyzes the upcoming Ukraine-US presidential meeting at the UN, possible war end scenarios, and security guarantees.

Political scientist Ihor Reiterovych discussed the key issues for the coming week on the "Kluchok Time" channel, focusing on the anticipated meeting between the Ukrainian and US presidents during the UN General Assembly. President Zelensky is expected to attend the International Crimea Platform summit, participate in major economic events, and hold key talks with US President Biden as well as a notable meeting with Trump.

Zelensky highlighted a large number of bilateral meetings, emphasizing defense and economic matters. He also discussed plans for Ukrainian arms and drone exports to the US, Europe, and other countries to fund domestic military production. Each weapon sold abroad, according to Reiterovych, could finance the manufacture of several units for Ukraine’s own needs.

When it comes to a potential agreement to end the war, different models are being considered, including the so-called Korean or Finnish scenarios. However, Zelensky has stated that Ukraine is not pursuing any of these models and instead is focusing on obtaining security guarantees prior to any final agreement.

Reiterovych notes that the Korean scenario involved a ceasefire without a comprehensive peace treaty—similar to what is now being discussed for Ukraine. In his view, the current plan seems to revolve around establishing robust security guarantees from international partners, aligning with approaches previously suggested by Trump and echoed by Zelensky.

It is possible that military officials, rather than politicians, could sign the actual agreement. Crucially, Ukraine seeks strong and reliable security commitments, potentially in the form of allied military presence, similar to US bases in South Korea.

The coming week could be decisive in aligning US and Ukrainian positions regarding the ceasefire and future security guarantees. The expert advises closely following events and continuing public discussion as negotiations evolve.
