Key statements by Zelensky, strikes on Russia, new war scenarios: the day's summary

Zelensky outlined possible scenarios for ending the war, Trump's influence, drone strikes on Russia, and European security developments.

On September 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made several important statements during a briefing with journalists. He notably said that a peace agreement with Russia might never be signed and that hostilities could only be halted by a ceasefire arrangement without a formal peace treaty. This scenario, involving a frozen conflict, has been discussed before and suggests a cessation of fighting without a final settlement.

Zelensky also announced the creation of assault troops in Ukraine, which will include a dedicated drone unit, and emphasized the importance of achieving drone parity with Russia for effective operations. He noted that the production of long-range drones in Ukraine now depends mainly on available funding.

Other significant statements included coordination with Poland and Romania for countering drone incursions in western Ukraine, Russia's mobilization crisis and record lows in contract signings, discussion of a "Korean scenario" for freezing the war, and the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine.

Zelensky stated his readiness to negotiate with both Putin and Trump in any format, though the Russian side is not currently interested in dialogue.

On the night of September 20, Ukrainian drones struck oil pumping stations in Russia's Volgograd and Samara regions, causing operations to halt. At the same time, Russia continued attacks with Shahed drones on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv and Chernihiv.

International updates included Trump’s proposal to attract wealthy migrants to the US, France's initiative to recognize Palestine, the US decision to reduce aid to Baltic states and NATO members, and a large-scale cyberattack affecting major European airports. Lithuania’s defense minister called for tougher protection of NATO airspace.

The update concluded with news of unrest in Russia's defense industry as the head of Khimprom Engineering, a key supplier of components for Shahed-Geran drones, was found dead.
