Political Expectations Before the Zelensky–Trump Meeting: Key Focus Areas and Ukraine's Stance

Ukraine strikes Russian targets in Crimea as global leaders discuss peace, security guarantees, and the future of international support.

The latest events put the global political class on alert: Ukrainian forces have struck Russian helicopters and radar stations in temporarily occupied Crimea, while international leaders prepare for discussions in New York. One of the most anticipated is the meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine’s negotiating position is strengthened by three key factors: the effectiveness of its Armed Forces, ongoing sanctions, and continued strikes on strategic targets, especially Russian oil refineries. In August alone, Ukraine managed to damage 17% of Russia’s oil processing, providing a strong argument on the international stage.

Trump stated disappointment in Putin, but did not clarify who he meant as the losing side. Analysts suggest expectations for the Zelensky–Trump meeting are moderate: the maximum outcome might be arranging further talks with Putin or an increase in military support.

The US role in reducing oil prices, thereby limiting Russia’s war financing, is also under discussion. European countries are debating security guarantees for Ukraine, highlighting that any such commitments would require a readiness to provide military support. It is also noted that Putin should have no veto over these guarantees.

The New York summit will also address Europe’s security, the impact of disinformation, and Russian propaganda. Ukraine continues to provide leadership in resistance and urges further backing from partner nations.
