Political scientist Ihor Reyterovych, on his "Klochok Time" channel, examined recent provocations by the Russian Federation against European countries. He emphasized that while Russia’s actions target NATO’s eastern flank, the Kremlin’s primary aim is to influence Ukraine by putting pressure on Europe and the United States.
One recent example, according to Reyterovych, was Russian aircraft violating Estonian airspace. He notes that such incidents may become more frequent and bolder, serving as elements of preparation for a potential conflict or to sway public opinion in Europe.
The expert argues that NATO’s response must be immediate: military and political protocols require revision, as today’s standards date back to the Cold War and are no longer adequate. Reyterovych suggests adopting tougher measures, including downing aircraft that violate airspace, as Turkey once did.
Another key issue is the modernization of NATO’s nuclear doctrine. Reyterovych believes the Alliance should expand the presence of nuclear weapons on its eastern flank and clearly provide for a non-conventional response to conventional threats in its strategic documents.
He concludes that the swiftness and flexibility of NATO's actions are crucial not only for effective deterrence but also for the Alliance’s continued relevance amid a new wave of Russian aggression.
