UK and Other Countries Recognize Palestine: Reactions and Ukraine's Position

Overview of the recent recognition of Palestine by the UK, Canada, Australia, and others, and its impact on international politics and Ukraine's stance.

On September 21, the United Kingdom officially recognized Palestine, joining several countries that made similar decisions ahead of the UN General Assembly. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated the move supports peace in the Middle East and does not endorse terrorist organizations. Previously, the UK waited for a peace agreement, but the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the acceleration of Israeli settlements in the West Bank changed London's approach.

Canada, Australia, and Portugal also announced recognition, joining Ireland, Norway, Spain, Slovenia, Armenia, and others. France was the first from the G7 countries to do so. More than 150 UN member states now recognize Palestine. The recognition is largely symbolic, calling for 1967 borders with Jerusalem as the capital but without a standing army.

The decisions by the UK and others have drawn criticism from Israel and the US, who view them as obstacles to the peace process. Israel threatens a strong response, possibly including annexation. The US is boycotting the related UN summit. The Palestinian Authority welcomes the move, while Hamas celebrates and refuses a truce. The EU, the Arab League, and several nations support international efforts to resolve the conflict.

Ukraine has recognized Palestine since 1988, but today, despite supporting a two-state solution, its focus remains on relations with Israel, especially given the ongoing war with Russia and Kyiv’s foreign policy priorities. Ukraine tries to balance support for both sides, stressing the importance of justice for both peoples.

Palestine’s renewed prominence in global politics is reflected in the focus of the UN General Assembly. The issue has highlighted double standards in the international arena and increased pressure and protests regarding Israel’s actions.

In summary, the move by the UK and other countries is significant for the two-state solution and underscores the divisions between key players. Ukraine, despite official recognition of Palestine, remains cautious in its support and focuses on its own situation.
