The Veza Center for Civic Analysis held an interview with political scientist Ihor Iyterovych on recent statements by Donald Trump regarding support for Ukraine in the war with Russia and the reaction of European leaders.
The discussion focused on the nuances of Trump’s message on Truth Social, where he outlined his stance that the European Union should take a leading role in assisting Ukraine. At the same time, EU leaders, particularly Kaja Kallas, stressed that Europe cannot bear the full burden alone, emphasizing the need for joint action with the US and NATO.
According to the expert, Trump’s change in rhetoric is largely symbolic so far, with no concrete actions observed. Attention was paid to the response of European diplomats, pointing to the limits of their capabilities and the challenge of balancing support for Ukraine with preventing escalation in Europe.
The interview addressed security initiatives such as the creation of a “drone wall” and NATO countries’ roles in supplying arms. It also covered complex intra-EU relations, positions of various countries regarding sanctions against Russia and oil, and the prospects of Ukraine’s integration into European structures.
Iyterovych noted that Ukraine should maintain active dialogue with both Europe and the US, while bolstering its own military with partner support. However, expectations for more systematic and long-term assistance remain difficult under current geopolitical circumstances.
Overall, the expert highlights the importance for Ukraine to keep pressuring partners while preparing for possible shifts in political decisions in both the US and Europe.
