Moldovan Elections: Impact on Ukraine and European Integration

Political scientist Ihor Reiterovych analyzes Moldova's parliamentary elections, their potential impact on Ukraine, and European integration prospects.

Political scientist Ihor Reiterovych on the Klochk Time channel discussed the course and significance of parliamentary elections in Moldova for Ukraine. He emphasized that the outcome will determine whether Moldova moves toward Europe or shifts toward Russia, which will directly influence Ukraine’s prospects for EU integration.

Fifteen parties, four electoral blocs, and four independent candidates are participating. President Maia Sandu has already voted and called on citizens to defend democracy. However, Moldova’s key feature is its parliamentary-presidential system, meaning the government and parliamentary coalition will set the country's direction.

The main contest is between pro-European forces and pro-Russian parties. The latter have high chances due to substantial Russian funding and the use of the shadow economy for voter bribery. Authorities have restricted several pro-Russian parties and candidates, but challenges remain.

Reiterovych highlighted the situation in Transnistria—a pro-Russian enclave posing a major problem for both Moldova and Ukraine. The election outcome will determine whether this status continues or Russian influence in Moldova increases.

An additional important aspect is the joint European integration of Ukraine and Moldova. Currently, both countries are moving together, but pro-Russian victory in Moldova could complicate the process for Kyiv as well. Reiterovych stressed the importance of monitoring Moldova’s electoral procedures, as some elements may be used in Ukraine’s future elections.
