Moldova's Elections: Political Balance, Transnistria, and the EU Path – Expert Analysis

In-depth analysis of the results of Moldova's elections, political actors, the challenges of EU integration, and the significance of Transnistria.

On September 30, the Center for Public Analytics "Vezha" hosted a detailed analysis of the latest elections in Moldova. Host Valerii Klochok invited Yevhen Magda, director of the Institute of World Policy, to discuss the election results, political balance, and the impact of Transnistria on the region.

The expert noted that the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) unexpectedly retained its majority, maintaining a pro-European course and anti-corruption stance. The authorities managed to limit the influence of Ilan Shor—a figure tied to financial scandals and pro-Russian circles—though the voter bribery network was not completely neutralized.

Maya Sandu’s role was emphasized. While securing a parliamentary majority, her independent approach and lack of allied pro-European parties pose challenges for future reforms. Sandu’s party now faces close scrutiny from the opposition and Moldovan society.

Regarding EU integration, experts predict Moldova and Ukraine will move forward simultaneously, though Moldova may go ahead due to its smaller size, previous legal integration experience, and no ongoing war. The EU’s recent decision to open all clusters for Moldova highlights its readiness for reforms.

Tensions may arise in Moldova-Ukraine relations, especially in the context of integration speed and the future of Transnistria. The fate of this region is significant both for security and future EU financial policies. In conclusion, despite the pro-European victory and relative stability in Chisinau, key challenges remain, with reforms depending on neighboring countries and the West.
