Naftogaz of Ukraine has reported the largest attack on the country's gas industry since the onset of the full-scale war, with several facilities suffering critical damage.
These strikes on the energy sector form part of Russia's strategy to pressure Ukraine into capitulation by targeting essential infrastructure. In addition, Russia aims to demonstrate that Ukraine cannot survive without Russian gas or gas transit, thus increasing pressure on Europe.
The destruction of infrastructure will require Ukraine to seek support from European partners and purchase gas on the global market, which will significantly raise energy costs. Russian attacks on energy facilities are expected to continue through winter, further impacting Europe.
Recently, incidents involving Russian drones have increased in European airspace, forcing temporary airport closures in Munich and Prague. These actions pose risks to civil aviation and may result in financial losses across Europe.
The main goal of Russia is to raise the cost of war for both Ukraine and Europe. Attacks on Ukrainian gas and energy systems are intended to make supporting Ukraine appear more expensive, to discourage further aid, and to pressure Ukraine into accepting Moscow's conditions.
However, such Kremlin actions may ultimately strengthen European solidarity and support for Ukraine amid a clear escalation of hybrid conflict with the European Union.
