Ukrainian drones strike Sochi during Putin's visit: Russia and Europe's reaction

Ukrainian forces targeted Sochi, Leningrad Region, and Donbas. European Parliament debates ban on Russian oil and gas.

Ukrainian defense forces conducted a series of drone attacks on strategic targets in Russia while President Vladimir Putin was in Sochi. The strikes damaged an oil refinery in the Leningrad region, a command post in Donbas, a radar station in the Kursk region, and destroyed a Russian missile ship. Sochi airport was temporarily shut down following these attacks.

Russian propagandists initially denied Ukraine's capability for such strikes, blaming Kazakhstan, but the consistent success of Ukrainian drone operations proved otherwise, highlighting their ability to hit targets at significant distances.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament is debating a gradual ban on Russian oil from 2026 and gas from 2027. This decision will be a crucial test for European politicians regarding energy independence, as Russian energy exports continue to finance the war in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian side stresses that halting Russian energy revenues could lead to a faster end to the conflict. The European Parliament's vote is expected on October 16.
