Global reaction to new Russian attack: surveillance satellites over Lviv, Western response and drone incidents in Europe

During a Russian attack on Lviv region, Chinese surveillance satellites were recorded overhead. Western response remains muted. Overview of European drone incidents.

During Russia's latest attack on the Lviv region, three Chinese surveillance satellites—Yugan 33, Yugan 33 Tre03, and Yugan 3404—were detected overhead. This was reported by a military resource, though it remains unclear whether these satellites were conducting direct reconnaissance at the time of the strikes.

The global reaction to this attack has been largely restrained. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a statement criticizing the West for its lack of strong response to Russian missile strikes, emphasizing that Moscow continues its aggression due to this silence. Zelensky said, “That is why Putin does this. He simply laughs at the West and the silence, the lack of strong action in response.”

The Lithuanian foreign minister called on Europe to halt imports of Russian oil and gas, but significant trade in this sector continues despite these appeals. The EU’s foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas stated that Russia is masking a failed offensive with terrorist attacks and will not stop unless forced.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin commented on the potential delivery of American long-range missiles to Ukraine, warning that it could worsen relations with the United States. The Russian leader claimed that delivering Tomahawk missiles would “destroy the positive trends” that have appeared in bilateral contacts.

Other incidents are occurring alongside these attacks. Meteorological balloons from Belarus entered Lithuanian airspace, forcing temporary closure of Vilnius airport and causing flight delays. In Germany, military surveillance drones were detected over Munich Airport, and German police detained a drone operator in Frankfurt.

Similar cases were reported in Poland, where remains of an unidentified drone were found near Warsaw. In response to potential threats, Switzerland is strengthening its anti-drone systems to protect critical infrastructure and military units.

As for Europe’s overall response, some countries—such as Italy, Hungary, and Romania—are less active in addressing new attacks. Overall, Europe faces new security challenges amid a rise in the use of drones and balloons over strategic targets.
