Renowned Ukrainian journalist, blogger, and writer Ostap Drozdov discussed on Radio UA Chicago the issue of elections in Ukraine during wartime. He noted that the recent decision by the Verkhovna Rada regarding local councils effectively means that there will be no elections in Ukraine until martial law ends.
According to the parliamentary decision, the powers of all local councils and mayors elected in 2020 have been extended indefinitely due to the war. Drozdov emphasizes that this signals there will be no change of power at any level, including parliament and the presidency—no elections are planned.
Legislative explanations cite the principle of governance continuity as a guarantee of stability during war. The expert points out that prolonged tenure without power rotation inevitably leads to increased corruption and political system closure. He believes the lack of political turnover contradicts fundamental democratic principles.
Drozdov also commented on the initiatives regarding the participation of military personnel and the diaspora in elections, as well as international reports on some politicians preparing for possible elections. He highlighted the inconsistency: public events and concerts can be held, but polling stations cannot function.
The interview also covered an audit of defense procurements conducted with the involvement of international journalists, which found significant overpricing and use of intermediaries. According to Drozdov, this is a consequence of unchanged power structures without competition.
