Trump's Peace Initiatives: Parallels Between the Middle East and Ukraine

Analytical discussion on Donald Trump's role in peace initiatives in the Middle East and prospects for ending the war in Ukraine, focusing on Europe's position.

On October 10, experts from the Center for Public Analytics Veza, including Valerii Klochok, Andriy Horodnytskyi, Maksym Nesvitailov, and Oleksandr Antonyuk, held a discussion about the peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, Donald Trump's involvement in the talks, and what this experience could mean for the Russia-Ukraine war.

Experts noted the cyclical nature of conflict in the Middle East and questioned the sustainability of such peace deals, emphasizing that the agreements often amount to temporary ceasefires due to unresolved root causes. Parallels were drawn to the war in Ukraine, particularly regarding security guarantees, enforcement mechanisms for agreements, and the stance of the involved parties.

The discussion analyzed the potential influence of Trump on the Ukraine conflict, his statements on imposing possible sanctions against Russia, and the prospects for providing Ukraine with Western weaponry. Experts expressed skepticism about Trump’s practical involvement, taking into account US domestic politics and the symbolic as well as technological facets of weapons like the Tomahawk missile.

Special attention was given to the role of the European Union. Analysts concluded that Europe is now the key player in resolving the war and shaping the future of Ukraine’s support. The slow shift in positions among European politicians, the rise of populism, political destabilization risks, and the need for updated European defense strategies in the face of modern threats were all discussed.

The panel concluded that Ukraine’s fate—and, in part, that of Europe itself—largely depends on the readiness of European partners to take responsible action in the context of ongoing confrontation with Russia. Strengthening defense capabilities and enhancing international security cooperation were recommended.
