Trump and Zelensky May Meet This Week: Focus on Ending the War

A possible meeting between the US and Ukrainian presidents may mark a new stage in efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

US President Donald Trump has not ruled out meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as soon as this week. Zelensky himself previously mentioned the possibility. This follows two recent phone conversations between the leaders amid US peacemaking efforts in the Middle East.

Ending the Russia-Ukraine war has become Trump’s main foreign policy priority after his announcement of the end of the Middle East conflict. During a speech in Israel, Trump said his team will now focus on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He also cited lengthy discussions by his special representative with Russian President Putin.

At the White House meeting, the leaders are expected to discuss ongoing Russian missile attacks on Ukraine, air defense requirements, and possible delivery of Tomahawk missiles. Trump warned that if Putin refuses to end the war, there will be serious consequences. In response, Russian officials threatened escalation, even hinting at potential use of nuclear weapons if Tomahawks are supplied to Ukraine.

Despite the limited number of missiles, US approval may prompt allied countries to provide long-range weapons, potentially affecting the course of the war and Russian industry. The leaders may also draw on lessons from ending the war in the Middle East, where the US acted with Israel.

This upcoming meeting could increase pressure on the Kremlin and pave the way for renewed negotiations. Some experts note that the current Middle East “peace pause” creates an opportunity to boost Western support for Ukraine.
