Attacks on Russian Energy: Ukraine's Response to Russian Strikes

Ukraine intensifies strikes on Russian energy infrastructure in response to Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power sector.

This morning, Ukraine reported another drone attack on the Novokuybyshevsk oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region. Russian authorities have been unable to extinguish the fire, and local gas stations are seeing queues due to fuel supply disruptions.

As a response to massive shelling of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Ukraine has begun striking Russian oil refineries, gas processing plants, and electricity sector facilities. Recently, an attack targeted the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant, one of the largest in Russia.

Over the past month, there have been at least 14 attacks on Russian energy facilities, including power plants and substations in various regions. This strategy seeks to segment Russia’s power system, mirroring Russian tactics against Ukraine’s own energy network.

Despite significant challenges, attacks on Russian infrastructure are expected to continue. Ukrainian military and volunteer organizations urge citizens to support the armed forces and defense sector, including financially contributing to new equipment and drones.

Meanwhile, Russian officials label Ukrainian strikes as terrorism, though these attacks are retaliatory responses to widespread Russian shelling of Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

This escalation from both sides suggests the conflict is far from over, and both countries are preparing for a difficult winter with energy supply disruptions.
