China in Global Politics, Role of Rare Earth Metals and Geopolitical Prospects: Interview with Artur Kharetonov

Artur Kharetonov discusses China's global influence, rare earth exports, US-Australia-Japan relations, and impact on Russia and Central Asia.

On October 21, the Center for Civic Analytics “Vezha” interviewed Artur Kharetonov, President of the Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine, on China’s rising influence in global politics. The conversation focused on rare earth elements, economic cooperation between the US and Australia, and geopolitical changes in Central Asia and the Far East.

The discussion highlighted a recent strategic deal between the US and Australia for joint development of rare earths, totaling $8.5 billion. Kharetonov emphasized that Australia possesses major reserves and processing capacity, reducing global reliance on Chinese exports. He noted that while China maintains a monopoly on processing rare earths, new investment and partnerships are gradually shifting the market balance.

Regarding the possible Trump-Xi summit, Kharetonov underlined US diplomatic efforts to weaken Chinese influence over Russia by proposing alternative agreements. He also mentioned likely upcoming meetings between Trump and various Asian leaders, including Putin.

Another key topic was China’s strengthened economic presence in Central Asia and Russia’s Far East, specifically via control of Arctic transport routes and infrastructure. Kharetonov pointed out that China is gradually displacing Russia as the main economic actor in these regions.

The expert underscored the risks of dependency on Chinese goods and technologies and advocated for diversifying sources and supply chains to boost global security. He argued that the struggle for Arctic influence and developing new supply routes should be a priority for the democratic world.

In conclusion, Kharetonov warned of increased risks for Ukraine and the world due to China’s strengthening and stressed the importance of forging strategic economic and political alliances beyond reliance on China.
