Overview: Russian Attacks on Ukraine, Leaked Peace Plan and Tension in the US

Russia attacks Ukraine, causing major energy issues; a draft peace plan emerges and political tensions escalate in the US.

Russian forces have once again attacked Ukraine, resulting in power supply disruptions at the South Ukraine and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants. In several regions, including Sumy and Zaporizhzhia, civilian infrastructure was struck, leaving casualties and fatalities among the population.

Rail infrastructure was damaged by overnight attacks in Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Some train schedules have been altered, but no railway staff have been injured.

The IAEA reports a massive strike involving over 700 aerial targets, damaging critical substations supplying nuclear facilities. The partial loss of electricity remains a concern for nuclear safety.

Meanwhile, a draft 12-point peace plan is circulating, proposing a two-stage truce process, ceasefire monitoring and control, transferring the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to a third party, partial lifting of sanctions on Russia, security guarantees, and creating a fund for Ukraine’s reconstruction from frozen Russian assets.

In Russia, a public debate is rising over the possible use of bank funds for state projects, underscoring growing economic challenges.

In the US, amid rising political tension and protests, members of Trump’s administration have relocated to military bases. The army and National Guard are preparing for possible unrest. Nuclear tests have also sparked political disputes in Congress.
