On October 29, the Netherlands held snap parliamentary elections following the collapse of the government due to internal coalition disputes. This marked the third election in five years, highlighting ongoing political instability in the country.
Early polls had put Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) in the lead, known for its anti-immigration stance and calls to reduce EU influence. However, failures in budget policy and migration control reduced their support.
The results proved surprising as the pro-European centrist party D66, led by 38-year-old Rob Jetten, took first place with 16.9% of the vote and around 26 seats—tripling their numbers from 2023. The PVV came in second with 16.7%, losing 11 seats. The People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) secured 21 seats, while the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) rose to 18 seats.
Analysts note that this centrist win signals a reversal from radical forces and a desire for stability. For Ukraine, this indicates sustained and possibly increased Dutch support in military, financial, and political fields. The likely D66-led government is committed to supporting Ukraine and strengthening Euro-Atlantic security.
The Netherlands remains a key European ally for Ukraine, providing significant economic and military support, including F-16 supplies, funding, joint drone production, and assistance for Ukrainian refugees. The centrists’ victory could signal an expansion of aid and consolidated solidarity with Kyiv as the war continues.
