Today it was reported that Russian forces are not only attacking Ukraine’s energy sector but are also striking substations from Ukrainian nuclear plants, raising nuclear safety concerns. In response, Ukraine has launched mass strikes on Russian energy and economic targets.
Overnight, drones and missiles struck the Oryol power station, Vladimir substation, and the Yaroslavl oil refinery, resulting in electricity and heating disruptions in several Russian regions. The Yaroslavl oil refinery is especially critical, providing fuel for the Russian army.
Russia’s economy is deteriorating: hydrocarbon export revenues have dropped to record lows, nearly half of the budget goes to military spending, and both taxes and utility tariffs have risen. Small and medium businesses report higher tax burdens and greater difficulty working, spurring protests.
Ukrainian officials continue to call for support for the armed forces, reporting the delivery of FPV drones and other equipment to military units on the front lines.
Facing these economic challenges, Russian authorities are increasing internet censorship and preparing to block Telegram, which, combined with economic hardship, may spark further public dissent.
