Zelensky: Battle for Pokrovsk, Missile Threats and Possible Talks with Russia

Zelensky's public statement on the situation in Pokrovsk, Russian missiles in Belarus and the prospect of negotiations with Russia.

Today, during a public meeting with the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Zelensky spoke about the intense battle for Pokrovsk. According to him, Russian forces have made taking the city a priority, concentrating 170,000 soldiers there. However, Ukrainian troops are not surrounded and the situation remains under control.

Zelensky emphasized that Russian President Putin wants to take control of the city and is preparing for talks while recalling similar visits to Mariupol in the past. The president assured that Ukrainian defenders are holding the line, and upcoming developments will depend on the determination shown by both sides.

Additionally, Belarus has deployed the Russian "Oreshnik" ballistic missile, creating new security risks for Europe, especially Belarus's neighboring countries. This is the first official confirmation of such a missile in use, which has previously been launched at Ukraine. According to Ukrainian sources, just one out of three known missiles remains, but production continues.

Zelensky said Ukraine will provide partners with information about 25 Russian companies involved in manufacturing these missiles. Belarusian sources state the "Oreshnik" system will be on combat duty in Belarus by the end of 2025, posing a danger with a range of 5,000 km.

Zelensky also announced that the Ukrainian-made Flamingo cruise missile has been used in nine actual combat operations and hinted at more Ukrainian long-range strikes against Russian targets.

The president highlighted the difficult situation on the Pokrovsk front, adding that tough decisions might be taken, such as tactical withdrawal to preserve troops, but the situation is, for now, under control.

The discussion also considered recent messaging about possible peace negotiations. Experts and politicians believe an increase in public statements from Ukraine, Russia, and global leaders could indicate preparations for a new negotiating round once a peace plan is unveiled and if political conditions align.

The potential role of the United States and former President Trump was also mentioned, as well as the possibility of quick meetings between Ukrainian, Russian, and US delegations. The military situation in Pokrovsk and broader dynamics in eastern Ukraine may be key for peace talks to intensify.
