Trump-Xi Meeting: China's Stance on the Ukraine War and US Involvement

Experts analyze the outcomes of the Trump-Xi meeting, China's position on the Ukraine war, and diplomatic strategy of the US and Russia.

Following the meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, experts have discussed its potential impact on the Russia-Ukraine war and the global geopolitical landscape. Unlike the US, China avoids making strong statements on Ukraine and is not showing willingness to intervene in resolving the conflict. Xi Jinping focuses on stabilizing China's economy, restoring investment attractiveness, and export orientation, while seeking to avoid escalating relations with the US.

Political analysts note that China intends to maintain the status quo and strengthen economic expansion, particularly in Russia. After talks with Trump, it is assessed that Xi offered only tacit consent not to interfere in the war, nor to actively help end it. Official Chinese statements and those from the Friends of Peace Group, which includes Brazil and countries of the Global South, have similarly expressed general support for ending hostilities without direct action.

At the same time, Trump is cautious about negotiating with Putin, refusing meetings without tangible outcomes. Russia has also stated readiness for talks only when substantive results are guaranteed. Each side is therefore focused on its own interests, avoiding unnecessary escalation without guaranteed benefit.

Experts conclude that the meeting has brought stability to US-China relations and signals continued caution about involvement in the military conflict in Ukraine, as China seeks to mitigate political and economic risks.
