Geopolitical Balances Around Ukraine: Europe, USA, China and the Role of Central Asia

Expert panel discusses Ukraine's geopolitical challenges: Europe's, USA's, China's roles, sanctions, mobilization, Central Asian events, and nuclear risks.

On November 7, experts gathered at the Veža Center for Civic Analytics to discuss Ukraine’s strategic situation amid global power shifts. Political scientists and military experts addressed the influence of the USA, Europe, China, and the growing significance of Central Asian countries in contemporary geopolitics.

A key focus was the cautious approach of the European Union regarding continued support for Ukraine. Experts pointed to delayed financial and military aid, hesitancy around reparation loans, and signs of strategic restraint. Meanwhile, China’s rising influence was identified as a critical factor, with both the USA and Europe acknowledging the need for engagement with Beijing in any potential peace process.

Participants agreed that significant peace negotiations would hardly be possible without China’s active involvement. Backdoor contacts are taking place among the USA, China, and the EU, shaping the prospects for European security and Ukraine’s future position.

Attention was also paid to developments on the front line—specifically the situation in the Pokrovsk sector, high Russian losses, and the overall trend toward a prolonged war of attrition. Ukraine’s challenges with mobilization, military resourcing, and reliance on international assistance were highlighted.

The discussion spanned sanctions enforcement, USA-China rivalry in Central Asia, and the threat of new Russian nuclear tests. Stronger Ukrainian participation in diplomatic processes and deeper outreach to China were emphasized as strategic imperatives.

In conclusion, the experts identified long-term European security, US and Chinese economic interests, and Ukraine’s need for stronger international engagement as the central issues. Panelists stressed the importance of unity, flexible international relations, and internal reforms to empower Ukraine’s negotiating stance.
