Strikes on Novorossiysk and Kyiv: escalation and the role of drones in the war

Russia launched new missile and drone strikes on Ukraine, including Kyiv and Odesa. In response, Ukrainian drones and missiles hit Novorossiysk, disrupting oil exports. The importance of Novorossiysk for Russian logistics and the role of defense innovations such as interceptor drones are analyzed.

In the past day, Russia carried out massive missile and drone strikes on Ukraine, particularly targeting Odesa and Kyiv. Strikes in the Odesa region hit a market and killed two civilians. Kyiv was also subjected to a combined attack with missiles and drones, resulting in at least four civilian deaths.

Meanwhile, Russia reported numerous strikes on Novorossiysk, as Ukrainian drones and missiles targeted strategic infrastructure, including the oil terminal and an anti-aircraft missile system. According to Reuters, the port suspended oil exports, and the company Transneft halted oil deliveries to the port after the attack. This significantly impacts Russia's war financing capabilities.

Measures to defend against drone attacks have led to disruptions in mobile internet in Russia, but these interruptions hamper the coordination of their air defense systems. In Ukraine, the production and deployment of interceptor drones is expanding, with increasing deliveries to vulnerable regions like Chernihiv, where several enemy drones have been shot down.

Heavy fighting continues, with Russian forces launching assaults in the Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, Siversk, and Huliaipole directions. Ukrainian defenders receive constant support from communities, volunteers, and donors—250 new FPV drones were supplied to the military in the past day. Units express appreciation, highlighting the drones' importance in defense against enemy attacks.

There is ongoing discussion about necessary military reforms and greater international assistance to counter future Russian aggression. While Russia attempts to disrupt communications, this negatively affects its own air defense. At the same time, Russian officials revive talk of negotiations, but these statements are widely viewed as manipulative, given the ongoing hostilities.
