The situation around Venezuela is escalating: the United States is officially considering the possibility of a special military operation against Nicolás Maduro's regime. Both American and Venezuelan leaders have made statements, with Venezuela already announcing a reservist mobilization to defend Maduro's rule.
US President Donald Trump does not exclude either naval or ground military interventions. The US military is increasing its presence in the Caribbean Sea, destroying suspected drug smuggling boats and sending an aircraft carrier to the shores of Venezuela. The main stated aims, according to Trump, are to remove the Maduro regime and fight drug trafficking.
Venezuela has responded by mobilizing reservists, preparing military equipment, and seeking support from Iran, China, and Russia. However, Russia’s assistance has so far been limited to sending a transport plane with an air defense system, and it is unlikely Russia will engage further.
This emerging conflict could impact the war in Ukraine. A swift US victory may lower oil prices and worsen Russia’s finances, meaning more support for Ukraine. Conversely, a prolonged conflict could distract attention from Ukraine and reduce the scale of Western aid.
Amid international tensions, the Ukrainian front remains in focus. Russian forces have carried out a landing near Novopavlivka, creating a critical situation. Ukrainian defenders receive modern drone support, which boosts defensive capabilities, but further reforms and support for the military remain necessary.
