European leaders seek to amend Trump's Ukraine peace plan: key events and reactions

European leaders and Ukraine respond to Trump's peace plan, highlighting negotiation challenges and involvement of controversial officials.

European leaders are working to revise the peace plan for Ukraine proposed by Donald Trump. According to Bloomberg, allies hope to present their changes as constructive updates that address Ukraine’s interests. There are ongoing discussions regarding a direct meeting with Trump to discuss the situation and determine further steps.

The United States insists that Ukraine accept 28 points from the new plan presented this week. However, official Kyiv is cautious and conducts consultations with US officials. The German chancellor is coordinating preparations for negotiations with Trump, and European leaders are preparing for a possible visit to Washington.

Ukraine has chosen its negotiating team, which includes officials previously suspected of corruption, raising concerns domestically and among international partners. The government states it will approach consultations responsibly and defend the national interest.

Meanwhile, some individuals suspected of embezzling state funds have been placed on wanted lists but have not been stripped of their citizenship, sparking debate about the effectiveness of these measures.

Leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and the UK are coordinating their efforts for talks with Trump. The expected meeting will focus on Ukraine’s security and the new US approach to conflict resolution.

Trump’s peace plan has sparked mixed reactions. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, known for his pro-Russian stance, expressed support for the plan. At the same time, critical voices in the US and Europe warn that it poses risks to Ukraine’s national interests.
