Negotiations between the US and Russian delegations are ongoing in Geneva, with the main focus on possible frameworks for a peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine. The US proposal is debated for whether it is a set plan or just a basis for further dialogue among the participants and international partners, including Ukraine and European states.
The first round of direct talks between the US and Ukraine demonstrated that the US offered a framework for discussion, not a final plan. Key points included security guarantees for Ukraine, the exchange of prisoners, and international monitoring of the ceasefire. The plan faced skepticism among US congressmen and senators from both main parties, while some European politicians likened it to the 1938 Munich Agreement.
The Ukrainian leadership issued cautiously optimistic statements regarding the negotiations. President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is crucial for European security and the world order. The US position remains focused on maintaining alliances and continuing sanctions pressure on Russia.
Negotiations have been marred by media leaks and mutual accusations regarding the release of sensitive details. The US delegation expressed dissatisfaction with the disclosure of Trump plan details to the media during the talks.
Meanwhile, an alternative "European" peace plan is under discussion, emphasizing ongoing Ukrainian control over its territories, international monitoring, and financial compensation in case of destruction. However, President Putin is reportedly not prepared to agree to any proposed quick end to the war.
The head of the US delegation, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, known for his hawkish foreign policy approach, stresses the importance of professional diplomacy and indicates that the negotiation process is far from complete.
Experts note that the main possible outcomes of the talks could be the preservation of Western strategic unity, adjustments to sanctions against Russia over time, and continued debate over detailed peace terms. The prospect of a final plan remains uncertain, suggesting that the conflict may become prolonged.
At the same time, Russia's worsening economy and continued sanctions may eventually force Moscow into concessions. Ukraine maintains solid international support, but further US aid will depend on how US policy evolves in the coming months.
