Zelensky Addresses Trump’s Plan: Between Dignity, Risks, and Negotiations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assessed Trump’s plan to end the war, outlined challenges, and discussed the risks of losing US support.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky used the Day of Dignity and Freedom to make an urgent statement to citizens regarding Donald Trump’s plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukrainian citizens may face a difficult choice between a tough winter or the risk of losing a key ally or even sovereignty. At the same time, he did not refuse discussion on Trump’s plan and pledged to do everything possible to prevent Russia from blaming Ukraine for a lack of desire for peace.

During his speech, Zelensky reminded of Ukraine’s “red lines” on statehood and sovereignty, indicating these remain inviolable, although their evaluation would also depend on the US. He highlighted the need for a mandate to make unpopular decisions in talks with Washington, noting that Moscow has not yet officially responded to Trump’s plan.

The plan is attributed to Trump’s representatives, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as well as Russia’s Kirill Dmitriev, who works to counter US sanctions. Trump’s plan reportedly requires Ukrainian forces to withdraw from territories in Donetsk region still under government control, which is a serious concern.

Zelensky warned that an outright rejection of Trump’s plan could damage relations with the US. He pointed out that current support is mainly in intelligence data, and emphasized unity and professionalism of Ukraine’s state institutions given the risks of renewed Russian aggression.

He called on society to support necessary, though unpopular, decisions for the sake of statehood. Zelensky invited citizens to a special broadcast to discuss ongoing developments and wished for peace in Ukraine.
