Geneva Discussions: Latest Peace Initiatives on Ending the War in Ukraine Explained

Key highlights of Geneva talks between Ukrainian, US, and European delegations about a ceasefire and prospects for ending the war.

Geneva hosted a meeting involving US, Ukrainian, and several European representatives to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine, particularly through a possible ceasefire. Although officials made public statements about the talks’ productivity, experts remain cautiously optimistic, noting that several crucial issues are unresolved.

According to Valerii Klochok, a public figure, Donald Trump seeks to halt the war by focusing primarily on stopping hostilities, rather than addressing the core issues important to Ukraine. The plan under discussion appears to have been coordinated with the Russian side. Russian officials’ inconsistent public statements show a lack of clear position regarding the proposed plan.

European nations maintain a cautious stance, waiting for security guarantees from the US to prevent potential Russian aggression. The fate of frozen Russian assets is also a major discussion point, important both for Trump and as a challenge for Europe.

Major disagreements remain over territorial issues, NATO membership, and Ukraine’s neutrality. Negotiations on these topics are unlikely to progress without Russia's direct involvement in the process.

Participants increasingly view economic measures and sanctions against Russia as key leverage, as a military solution appears improbable. Support from Europe and the US, and curbing trade with Russia, are considered essential means of influence.

The future of the peace process remains uncertain, and experts emphasize the need for effective sanctions and sincere engagement by international partners.

Valerii Klochok, head of the NGO “Nova Doroha,” contributed his insights to the discussion.
